Project Activities
The key project activities are divided into four categories:
A.Formation of National Democracy Watch Groups (NDWG): The National Democracy Watch Groups will comprise of women politicians, gender activists, academicians, media and security personnel represented from local to national levels. The NDWG will be formed in consultation with national partners/stakeholders and activated to monitor, assess and analyze national laws, policies and practices of democratic institutions and state agencies. The NDWG will be facilitating the national discourses as well as lobbying with state agencies and political parties for the formation of gender friendly policies and practices.
B.Developing common South Asian agendas and strategies for collective actions: Local interactions will be organized under the facilitation of watch groups to collect community perspectives on the issue of marginalization of women in political governance. Consolidating the findings of local exercise, national workshops will be organized to develop agendas, strategies and actions to address the gender insensitive undemocratic practices. The national findings will then be compiled to draft a brochure on common South Asian agendas and strategies for collective actions of civil society to address prevalent gender insensitive practices in politics.
C.Media advocacy: Trainings to journalists will be conducted at the national level to break the gender stereotypes in the mindset of people at large by promoting positive image of women politicians in the media. These trained journalists will then be mobilized for the collection of cases focusing on the struggle, violence, problems and success stories of women politicians. The selected cases will be published in the print media and broadcasted through local radios. Radio debates will be conducted to highlight the issue of gender based exclusion in politics.
D.Formation and activation of knowledge sharing platforms: to develop common understanding on the issues of gender sensitive democratic practices by sharing and learning from each other’s experiences, knowledge sharing interactions at the national level and virtual platforms will be intervened. A regional gender sensitive democratic charter will be developed and finalized during the regional knowledge sharing interaction and later translated and published in national languages. The charter will be shared with SAARC, national governments, major political parties and other major political stakeholders of the region through joint and institutional meetings.
